5th IEEE Middle East & North Africa COMMunications Conference Breaking Boundaries: Pioneering the Next Era of Communication
About Byblos
Byblos, is one of the world’s oldest cities. It has been continuously inhabited for over 7,000 years as
attested by the incredibly diverse ages of its ruins, and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Sitting on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, Byblos was a small fishing village, then it had grown to
a prosperous city through trade; Byblos became the ancient Phoenician port city.
Throughout its history, Byblos was conquered by several civilizations which made Byblos a cultural blend
that bears the marks of several civilizations: Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Byzantine…
When you walk in Byblos, you cannot but notice its architectural masterpieces, and you cannot but to
recognize its historical aspects, and unique sites. There is a Persian fortress from the 5th century
B.C., a crusader castle, medieval city walls, and an Obelisk temple that dates back to the times of the
ancient Egyptians.
Byblos is a lively, and authentic city that reflects its expansive history. Layers of civilization are
literally piled on top of one another in this archaeological site. Moreover, Byblos also offers several
beach resorts, restaurants, cafes, and bars along the coast.
Port Of Byblos
One of Lebanon’s most picturesque ports, the port of Byblos is an assortment of pastels and deep blues. Fishing boats speckle the harbor as the sea mirrors the bright sky above. You can enjoy the port simply by walking down it, or stopping by one of the many cafes and restaurants lining the seafront, or even enjoy boat rides in the Mediterranean Sea surrounded by Byblos historical monuments.
Old Souk
It connects the center of the city to the seaside. A wander around the old souk is essential,
particularly if you are looking for local handicrafts. There are several shops, and tourists can find
several souvenirs that reflect the historical, and cultural aspects of Byblos, and Lebanon. Added to
this, Gibran’s Lebanon is a book and souvenir store in the Old Souk from which you can pick up
literature about Lebanon, and different crafts made by local designers. Moreover, a visit of Memory of
Time is essential, you can find and discover fish fossils from the Middle East. You can also find old
churches and a mosque in the Old Souk.
After exploring the souk, take a seat at one of the cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal, a
drink, coffee and watch how life goes in the Old Souk of Byblos.
The Crusader Castle
The excavated remains of the ancient city, the Crusader castle, and the fortress are surrounded by old
walls (some medieval). You can get a tour around the historical site, and end your visit with a good
view of the entire site and the city of Byblos from the top of the castle.
After visiting the archeological site, a quick entertaining introduction to Lebanon's past can be found
at the Wax Museum near the castle. The wax figures illustrate scenes from the history and rural life of
the country.
